MATERA AND THE ROCK CHURCH PARK

Three days among rock churches and villages that line the Matera Ravine.

Duration: 3 days – 2 nights (max. 20 people)

Day I - [T]

  • Morning Arrival, get situated at the B&B; visit the Sassi and historic centre. From Piazza Vittorio Veneto, Apogees, the Romanesque Church of S. Giovanni Battista, and Piazza Sedile, to the 13th. Century Apulia Romanesque Cathedral. Then we descend into the Caveoso Sasso, to visit the Rock Churches and the Casa Grotta (Cave House).
  • Afternoon: departure for an excursion in the Rock Church Archaeological Park. Route: The Rupestrian Sanctuary of the Palomba, the Carved Village of the Timone Moors, the Rock Church of the Madonna della Croce.
  • Dinner at a restaurant in the Sassi.

Day II - [E]

  • Breakfast and departure for an excursion in the Moors of Sant’ Andrea, with a visit to a Rupestrian Complex and an ancient cheese maker from the 700’s.
  • Lunch at Farm. In the afternoon, visit the Crypt of the Original Sin and the Nature Reserve of San Giuliano.
  • Dinner at a restaurant in the Sassi.

Day III - [EE]

  • Breakfast and departure for an excursion to a Saracen Village: Route: Jazzo dell’Ofra, the Grotta dei Pipistrelli (Cave of Bats), the Grotta funeraria (Funeral Cave), Jazzo di Lama Quacchiola, the Cristo la Selva Cave, and a Saracen Village. Sack lunch at the Cave of Cristo la Selva.
  • Return

  • 2 nights stay in a B&B in the historic centre of Matera in a double room, including private bath and breakfast.
  • Service of a professional guide for 3 days
  • 2 dinners at a restaurant in the Sassi (drinks excluded)
